16 Week Ultrasound -- Half Way There (sort of)

We keep asking ourselves, "Is this real" and "At what point do we need to admit that everything is good and on track and actually start planning?"

As most of you know, we've been hesitant to jump the gun and get too excited. But there was something about hitting this 16 week milestone that made this all real. Maybe it was seeing the report with the estimated birth weight, the actual measurements of the twins' heads and abdomen, or maybe just the pictures of the almost-human-looking babies growing bigger every week. Whatever it was, it has made this all real and we're now going to start planning. That said, we know that it is still early on and that we have a long way to go, but we have to focus on being excited and the positive -- which is what this scan was all about.

So I said that we are half way there, sort of. Here's what I think... Since a singleton is normally born at 40 weeks or so, and twins are usually about 3-4 weeks earlier, I'm guessing that the two (which we are convinced are one boy and one girl) are going to be born around November 18 or so. That means they will be born at about 36 or 37 weeks. If that's true, then we are just about half way there, with only about 20 weeks left to go. That's awesome.

We get the next scan in four weeks. Following that scan I'm going to make it totally official and tell work.

I'll quit rambling now and get on with the details and pics...

The scan took place a few days before we hit 16 weeks and the twins were both measuring perfectly!

  1. I think twins in India typically come around 35 weeks, but you may want to check with your doctor.

  2. Congratulations on week 16! Great photos!!
We are exactly 1 mth behind you with our twins. I'm thinking (maybe more fantasizing) about 1 boy and 1 girl for us too. The 20 week mark seemed good to us too - to announce what seems our life's work!! Goodluck!!!

  6. It certainly DOES make it all very real when those little beans start looking like little people. Wonderful about the perfect measurements. This last half FLIES BY!!! Just you wait, with all your patience and everything. LOL.

    1. Ha! I hope so. As long as I have other things to distract me then I'm cool. Though, still not patient.

  7. Another milestone met perfectly! Great news. Twins are very unpredictable with arrivals so all I can offer is to not plan any date at all! Be ready but hope that they stay in as long as possible. Our twins came at 31 weeks but thankfully they were perfectly healthy. A true blessing.

    1. That's amazing. Really good to get perspective that they can come early or a little later, and all can still be OK.

  11. Amazing scan images - thanks for sharing. Some medical research findings published this month suggest that 37 weeks is the optimum time for twins - apparently more risk of complications for babies if left til 38 weeks or more. See http://www.abc.net.au/news/2012-06-13/twins-births-best-37-weeks-research/4067710 . Here's to 37 weeks!
